Captain Solok was a Vulcan 24th century Starfleet officer who commanded the starship USS T'Kumbra during the Dominion War. He was a decorated officer, having twice been awarded the Christopher Pike Medal of Valor, the second in early 2375.
Solok attended Starfleet Academy in the same class as Benjamin Sisko, and was well known for pointing out the fallibility of emotions and what he believed to be the superiority of Vulcan discipline. According to Sisko, he and Solok first tangled at the Launching Pad, a popular meeting place for cadets, when Solok arrived with several other Vulcan cadets and announced that they were studying "illogical Human bonding rituals". Sisko, drunk and annoyed, first tried to debate the relative merits of emotion versus logic with Solok, then challenged him to a wrestling match. Sisko lost. Afterward, Solok frequently reminded Sisko of their match. The Vulcan singled out the human cadet on campus and wrote five psychology papers about the wrestling match. Although Sisko hoped that their disagreements would subside after their graduation in 2354, they didn't. By 2375, Solok had published "over a dozen" essays comparing Human and Vulcan performance, all of them beginning with that wrestling match with Sisko.
When the T'Kumbra put in for repairs at Deep Space 9 (which was commanded by Sisko) in 2375, it had been ten years since the two had last met in person, but the animosity they shared for each other remained strong. Solok challenged Sisko to a game of baseball, with the hopes of humiliating Sisko by beating him at his favorite sport. Solok recruited his senior staff from the all-Vulcan crew to participate in the game.
The Niners were delighted when Rom managed to bring in their only run of the game. Solok, baffled by the Niners' celebration, made the Human mistake of grabbing the umpire, Odo, who promptly threw him out of the ball game. The Niners later celebrated at Quark's, further aggravating Solok. After Solok complained that Sisko was trying "to manufacture a triumph where none exists," the crew teased Solok about being too "emotional." When Sisko invited Solok to sign the game ball, Solok quickly left. (DS9: "Take Me Out to the Holosuite")
Captain Solok makes a few appearances in the Deep Space Nine relaunch novels. His first appearance is in the Gateway novel Demons of Air and Darkness in a holo-conference. He also appears in Lesser Evil and Unity.
